MON ONCLE (article first published : 2006-08-13)

On August 17, the Classic Movie from the Pietermaritzburg-based University Film Club is Jacques Tati's 1958 Mon Oncle.

Like the more famous M Hulot's Holiday, Tati's gloriously absurd satire on modern technology and those who rely on it stars the director himself as the naive Hulot whose simple lifestyle is contrasted with that of his sister and brother-in-law, who live in a house filled with automated gadgetry. Tati's comedy is supremely understated, but the film contains some wonderfully funny moments and some winning performances, including one from a decidedly depressed dachshund.

Films are shown at 18h00 in the CVA lecture Theatre in Ridge Road, Pietermaritzburg.
