HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (article first published : 2006-05-11)

This month's film in the European series presented by the University Film Club in Pietermaritzburg is Hiroshima Mon Amour, directed by Alain Resnais in 1959.

Resnais' boldly experimental feature-film debut, with a script by novelist and film-maker Marguerite Duras, deals with a brief affair between a French anti-war film-maker and a Japanese architect in a devastated post-war Hiroshima as well as with the woman's memories of her tragic affair with a German officer in occupied France. However, the film is less a story than a poetic visual meditation on time and memory.

Hiroshima Mon Amour will be screened on May 17 at 18h00 in the CVA Lecture Theatre, Ridge Road, Pietermaritzburg. Safe parking available.
