50 BEST CHICK FLICKS (article first published : 2006-04-24)

Premiering on May 1 on E! (Channel 41 on DStv) from 22h00 to midnight, join the legendary 80’s teen queens Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink) and Ally Sheedy (St Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, Oxford Blues) as they catch up with one another, share stories from their favourite movies and co-host the two-hour special 50 Best Chick Flicks: Sex, Cries and Videotape

Who could ever forget the moment when Thelma and Louise drove their car into the Grand Canyon? How many of us fantasised about turning a little clay with Patrick Swayze? And was there a dry eye anywhere as the final shot from Beaches faded out?

These are all classic “chick flicks” – those films that women flock to and boyfriends must be dragged to on a leash. They’re the films no self-respecting man would ever admit to seeing where, against all odds, the leading man does something impossibly romantic to win the heart of his lady fair.

These are the classic films that bring women together with their girlfriends to laugh, cry and celebrate the power of sisterhood . . . over and over again.

Which is the best “wedding” movie? How about the all-time champion “girl-power” film? Or how about the one tear-jerker that is a guaranteed heartbreaker? Everybody has their favourites, but only E! offers the definitive answer to this and other pressing Chick Flick questions.

Included in the show are new and old interviews with a bevy of popular “Chick Flick” actresses (and even a couple of guys), including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Hudson, Heath Ledger and Matthew McConaughey weighing in with their thoughts on everything from romance to revenge.

Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy guide viewers through the 50 films that define the Chick Flick genre. Besides classic clips and memorable moments from the best hanky-wringing films ever, commentary is provided by a chorus of avid moviegoers – both women and men – who share their thoughts on everything from Julia Roberts’ appeal to Madonna’s baseball prowess.

Based in Los Angeles, E! Networks is the world’s largest producer and distributor of entertainment news and lifestyle-related programming.
