MOOLAADE (article first published : 2006-04-15)

On April 20, the Pietermaritzburg-based University Club wll screen Moolaade, Ousmane Sembene’s 2004 film in which he tackles female genital mutilation. However, he does so in a way that avoids didacticism and instead presents the lives of its village community with affection and understanding.

Colle is a feisty, independent village woman who has defied tradition and refuses to allow her own daughter to be cut. When four young girls run from the ceremony and go to her for sanctuary, she invokes the moolaadé, a ritual form of protection.

The film will be shown at 18h00 in the CVA lecture theatre Ridge Road, Pietermaritzburg. Safe parking is available.
