NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE TEST (article first published : 2006-03-31)

South Africa’s biggest television quiz, Test the Nation, is back with The National Intelligence Test. Hosted live on SABC2 on April 2 at 19h00 by Jeremy Maggs and Masechaba Moshoeshoe, it features the world’s most intelligent man, psychology experts and six of South Africa’s bravest celebrities.

Following the Driving Test and The End of Year Test, The National Intelligence Test uses advance interactive technology to challenge in-studio celebrities, guests and viewers to answer a battery of questions this time gauging the national intelligence average with The Multiple Intelligence Test. The questions are grouped into the seven Multiple Intelligence Test categories namely - Logic, Linguistic, Kinesthetic, Musical, Environmental/nature, Emotional and Visual.

At home, viewers subscribing to all three cellular networks can participate in the test using their mobile phones to test their own intelligence and each participant will receive their individual scores on their phone after the show. In-studio participants will trigger their answers by means of interactive handsets.

Says Bessie Tugwana general manager SABC 2: “We encourage all South Africans to participate in The National Intelligence Test. It is a fun way of testing yourself and a programme that the whole family can participate in and enjoy together.”

The list of brave celebrities who are stepping up to the test are Strictly Come Dancing favourite and music maestro Zwai Bala, Oscar winning film Tsotsi’s lead actress Therry Phetho, Muvhango star Mara Louw, award winning writer and author Melinda Furguson and kwaito sensation Andile G.

The celebrities are in the company of one of the world’s smartest people, Garth Zietsman with an IQ of 185. Garth scored the second highest mark after a woman in the Mensa Mega test. Joining Garth on the expert panel to give guidance and commentary are leading psychologist William Mgomezulu and industrial psychologist Tryphina Maitin.

The six in-studio groups are made up of, Teachers, Bald, Blond, Gifted, Breast-Fed and Left Handed participants.

To ensure that the nation can participate, SABC 2 has negotiated SMS charges to be only R1 and all MTN, Vodacom and Cell C subscribers can participate.

It will cost viewers a total of R5 to play the game via SMS including R1 for registration. Registration lines are open the whole week and close at 18h00 on April 2. Participants can send a registration sms with their gender, age and closest city to the following Intelligence Test line number 32727. Only registered viewers will be allowed to participate on the night.

Eight hot holidays can be won. Viewers are encouraged to register early and watch the Sunday press for their own cut-out scorecard.
