ZERO TOLERANCE (article first published : 2006-02-20)

SABC 2 is currently broadcast five exciting films based on the Emmy Award nominated local series, Zero Tolerance. Loosely based on cases solved by The Scorpions, South Africa’s elite crime fighting organisation, these films boast a star-studded cast consisting of Moshidi Motshegwa, Patrick Shai, Meshack Mavuso, Nick Boraine, Terence Bridgett, Ben Kruger and Kim Engelbrecht.

Co-produced by Cinga Productions and Ochre Media, each film is a stand-alone short feature with a spectacular, distinctly South African storyline. The Zero Tolerance films also present a new, challenging approach to producing films in South Africa. The process has been to take themes from already established material and re-edit them to create an original series of films.

Still to come are Dirty Linen on February 25 at 21h30. When several homeless men die under mysterious circumstances, the Zero Tolerance team is called in to investigate. Discovering that a drug syndicate and crooked cops are using homeless men to smuggle cocaine, Sakkie Bezuidenhout goes undercover to investigate the truth. But when his cover is blown, the Zero Tolerance team must choose whether to abort the mission and rescue Sakkie, or wait until they have enough evidence to stop the drug cartel once and for all. Based on in-depth research, this film takes a haunting look at the workings of the Nigerian drug cartels in the inner cities of South Africa. Written by Steven Francis, Dirty Linen is directed by Tim Greene, Hilary Blecher and Sara Blecher. In the cast are Ben Kruger, Meshack Mavuso, Amanda Lane, Graham Weir and Sonni Chidiebere. (Duration 73 mins)

zt – three of three (Every 26 Seconds… ) will be screened on March 4 at 21h30. Hannalie de Kock – the IT expert in the Zero Tolerance unit – is gay. It’s not something she talks about and for her it plays no part in her work, until Sedica – her girlfriend – is raped. With her relationship already taking strain, Hannelie volunteers to investigate another rape case but she finds it difficult to keep her work and her personal life apart. It’s her first assignment and a dangerous one, involving her working undercover. Will Hannalie’s desire to avenge her partner’s rape make her a victim of the same crime? In South Africa a woman is raped every 26 seconds. This film takes an inside look at one victim of this heinous crime. Written by James Whylie and Collin Oliphant and directed by Hilary Blecher, Sara Blecher and Barry Berk, zt – three of three (Every 26 Seconds… ) stars Rolanda Marais, Kim Engelbrecht, Mbali Ntuli, Meshack Mavuso, Moshidi Motshegwa, Ben Kruger, Patrick Shai and Terence Bridgett. (Duration: 75 mins)
