NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore appear in the comedy romance Laws of Attraction on M-Net on February 23 at 11h00. Directed by Peter Howitt, the movie also stars Martin Sheen and Frances Fisher in a battle of the sexes comedy about two divorce lawyers who tear each other to pieces in the courtroom, but in reality, they just want to tear each other’s clothes off! Lovers of old-fashioned romantic comedies, such as George Cukor’s Adam’s Rib (1946) with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, will find much to enjoy in this film. Daniel Rafferty and Audrey Miller are brilliant divorce lawyers on opposing sides whose verbal sparring in the courtroom has a certain frisson. They have a few drinks together, one thing leads to another, and they wake up in bed together. This just won’t do, so they try and avoid one another. However, they are thrown together again when their respective clients - a rock star and a fashion designer - decide to call it quits. Before long, the lawyers are in Ireland, drinking Guinness and letting their hair down. They wake up to find they are married, and now they need lawyers of their own to untangle this marital mess! Laws of Attraction was nominated for two IFTA awards for costume and hair/make-up.
