CALLAS FOREVER (article first published : 2005-12-25)

On January 9 at 20h30, M-Net will present a fascinating look at diva Maria Callas, whose career spanned from 1942 to 1964. The drama Callas Forever is set in 1977 and looks at the diva in her reclusive days, and wonders what would have happened had she made a comeback.

The storyline is as follows: After a brilliant career, diva Maria Callas, now 53, is living as a recluse in her Paris apartment, alone with her memories and her recordings. When an old friend, gay filmmaker Larry Kelly, comes calling, asking Callas to star in his film Carmen, she is outraged, reminding him that her once wonderful voice is in ruins.

Kelly is adamant. Only her body and her energy need be in the film, he explains Ė he will use earlier recordings of her voice. Callas feels itís cheating but Kelly persuades her itís no more cheating than wearing a wig. And thus begins the comeback of the great Callas.

This comeback, of course, is fictional, and represents the desires of her many fans, acclaimed director Franco Zeffirelli included. Starring Fanny Ardant, the acclaimed French actress of 8 Femmes (8 Women) fame, Jeremy Irons and Joan Plowright. The movie is in English, French and Italian with English subtitles.
