MARIETTE HEENOP ON TV (article first published : 2005-12-16)

Upcoming Durban-based vocalist, Mariette Heenop is appearing on Dis Hoe Dit Is..., the DStv celebrity chat show on KykNet hosted by popular actor/singer/songwriter, Steve Hofmeyr, on December 23 at 20h00.

During her guest slot, Mariette Heenop performs the legendary jazz ballad, Cry Me A River, which has been immortalized by the likes of Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and Shirley Bassey. As usual, Heenop is accompanied by well-known Durban jazz pianist, Melvin Peters, and she also performs an impromptu duet with Hofmeyr, doing an extract from the 1978 hit single by Streisand and Neil Diamond, You Don't Bring Me Flowers.

The Dis Hoe Dit Is... show featuring Heenop and Peters was recorded live at the Broadacres Barnyard Theatre in Fourways, Johannesburg. This breakthrough comes on the back of the successful run the local duo enjoyed at Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo, Durban, last year with Barbra - The Audacity To Do Streisand - a moving tribute to the most successful female recording artist of all time.

Classically trained, Mariette Heenop's voice has been described as "rich" and "wide-ranging", and she subsequently handles Streisand property songs like Evergreen and People, as well as Andrew Lloyd Weber's Memory, from Cats, and more jazzy numbers like Cry Me A River, with ease and charm.

A protégé of Darius Brubeck, Melvin Peters' advanced technique, dexterity and ability to swing at any tempo need no introduction in local jazz circles, and he is widely-travelled.
