KNOWN GODS (article first published : 2005-09-9)

Known Gods is M-Net’s captivating new local drama series. Described as “a potent cocktail of sex, lust, murder and deceit, set in the Cape winelands”, the series will commence on M-Net on September 15 at 20h30.

The first episode of this 26-part series opens with a classical music concert, held at the posh wine estate Rossow, owned by the German billionaire Bruno Lohmeyer (Danny Keogh). But it seems as if not everyone is enjoying the fine music inside the hall. Two lovebirds wander off and the valley’s charismatic cellar master, Deetlef Koen (Patrick Lyster), a connoisseur of wine and women, is murdered.

The following day, a shy inspector, called Mickey Steadman (Jan Ellis), is put onto the case. He quickly discovers that many people had reason to kill Koen, but, unlike your usual murder mystery, the identity of the killer does not remain a secret for long – to the viewer, that is. Instead the plot is built around the way the secrets of the denizens of the valley unravel after this unfortunate incident and the power games people play.

Known Gods boasts a stellar cast, including Sandra Prinsloo, Antoinette Kellerman, Aletta Bezuidenhout, Susan Danford, Jan Ellis, Thami Ngubeni and Nina Swart. It was directed by David Lister and Regardt van den Bergh and written by award-winning scriptwriter Johann Potgieter.
