THE FLYER (article first published : 2005-08-28)

The M-Net Original Movies series returns on August 29 at 20h30 with the final film in the series, DV8 Feature, The Flyer.

The Flyer is the seventh film in the series, which also featured Academy Award-nominated film Yesterday, Murmur, Dollars & White Pipes, Gums & Noses, Skilpoppe and Swansong for Charlie.

It’s 1990. Kier (Ian van der Heyden), a street kid, robs an old man, Anders (Marcel van Heerden), of a briefcase. The lead of the gang Kier is part of, is Spies (Craig Palm). Anders manages to track Kier down and retrieve his briefcase. To make up for the money stolen, he takes Kier to his circus school and makes him do odd jobs. In awe of the trapeze artists who train at Anders’ school, Kier decides he too wants to become a trapeze artist – a ‘Flyer’.

Still a part of the gang, he and Spies rob a house. Spies is caught by the police, and ends up in jail. Ten years later, Kier has been hard at work, training as a trapeze artist. A journalist does a story about him, and Spies, recently released from jail, spots it. Spies has fallen back into the world of crime and now runs the Kit Kat Club. Spies introduces Kier to Mickey (Kim Engelbrecht), a dancer who works at the club. He falls in love with her, which affects his training and upsets Anders.

M-Net Original Movie The Flyer is written by Revel Fox and Brian Tilley, and produced and directed by Jeremy Nathan and Revel Fox.
