MISS MARPLE (article first published : 2005-08-23)

Veteran British actress Joan Hickson plays the definitive Miss Marple, a character based on Agatha Christie's own grandmother in the television series Miss Marple to be seen on BBC Prime on DStv.

“A pleasant woman,” remarked the famous novelist of her grandmother, “who nevertheless expected the worst of everyone and everything and was usually right”.

Miss Marple is able to solve difficult crimes not only because of her shrewd intelligence, but because, over her lifetime, the sleepy town of St. Mary Meade has been subject to as much murder and human depravity as that experienced by a major city.

A year never goes by in Miss Marple’s life without a handful of macabre happenings, and no crime can arise without reminding her of some similar incident.

This series brings to life four of Christie’s best stories; The Body in the Library, A Murder Is Announced, The Moving Finger and A Pocketful of Rye, dramatised in two-part adaptations.
