HETTY WAINTHROP INVESTIGATES (article first published : 2005-08-23)

On Mondays at 14h00, BBC Prime on DStv will feature Patricia Routledge in the return of the eponymous heroine in the third series of the award winning Hetty Wainthrop Investigates. With the help of her trusty assistant Geoff (Dominic Monaghan) and husband, Robert (Derek Benfield), Hetty embarks on nine new investigative adventures.

In the first, All Stitched Up on August 29, Detective Chief Inspector Adams (John Graham Davies) calls on Hetty for help with a sensitive case. Flattered, she is quick to outline her boundaries: "You know my terms of reference, Chief Inspector: no sex scandals, no divorce, no drug running and no industrial espionage."

He sends her to a council estate which is being terrorised by a young man called Lenny Thornber (Darren Tighe). District nurse, Maureen O'Callaghan (Lill Roughley), has had her car set on fire and Lenny is the obvious suspect. There is one witness but such is Lenny's grip on the community, that no one will speak out against him. Posing as Maureen's sister, Hetty joins the local sewing circle to encourage the women to speak out. Meanwhile, Geoff befriends David (Alan Halsall), a young lad who gets dragged along by Lenny to another arson attack.
