PRODUCTION FOR IDOLS UNDERWAY (article first published : 2003-04-17)

The production process for the second season of M-Net's talent search competition, Idols, has started. Fremantle SA will again take charge of this mammoth production, due to launch in June 2003.

Meanwhile, both M-Net and Fremantle SA are finalising the logistics of the call to entry process and the nationwide audition phase, elimination rounds and of course, the highly entertaining live shows.

Fischer announced that a few changes would be introduced, including a relook at presenters, judges and the format of the show. This time around, viewers will be treated to a weekly hour-and-a-half show on Sundays during Open Time. A dedicated channel on DStv will broadcast all the auditions, highlights packages and behind-the-scenes footage for the duration of Idols.

Apart from impressive audience ratings, the first local Idols' success was evident in the tremendous response from the public during the elimination process, with the final show garnering a total of 1.4 million votes via telephone and Internet, leading to a dream come true for the 25-year-old law student, Heinz Winckler, whose debut single quickly went double platinum.

Heinz Winckler has since released a CD and is constantly at the top of radio-stations' play lists while enjoying celebrity status and adoration from thousands of fans! Heinz also clinched a deal with Ster Kinekor which saw him sing the end credit song for the South African release of the Disney movie Treasure Planet. Heinz also performed at the opening game of the ICC World Cup Cricket Tournament between South-Africa and the West-Indies that was broadcast to hundreds of millions of cricket fans from all around the globe. Heinz sang the West-Indies' national anthem at this glorious occasion.
