CELEBRATE WOMEN’S DAY WITH DStv! (article first published : 2005-08-7)

In August, DStv is going all out to jump-start South African Women’s Day celebrations with a line-up of strong women across the channels. For sterling entertainment, DStv subscribers can stay in and watch E! Entertainment, The History Channel, BBC Food and MTV where women such as The Olsen Twins, Tracy Chapman, Rachel Allen and the Power Girls lead the pack on this Women’s Day.

In South Africa, Women’s Day commemorates August 9, 1956, when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws (legislation that required Black people to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’.)

However, on DStv as well as the rest of the country, this day has come to symbolise the emancipation of women from all lifestyles and all their achievements against all odds. So sit back and enjoy powerful programming that salutes women in the entertainment industry.

Start the day early with E! Entertainment (Channel 41) featuring the True Hollywood Story of Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen at 12h00. The two mega-star twins burst into the fickle entertainment industry when they were just six years old and have managed to amass themselves enough wealth to be mentioned on the world’s Most Richest People list. To find out how two six-year-old girls from a broken home became the youngest moguls in Hollywood history, watch E! Entertainment on Women’s Day.

For mouth-watering recipes, catch Rachel’s Favourite Food at 19h00 on BBC Food (Channel 70). This new 13-part series has professional cook Rachel Allen whipping up delicious menus for a whole host of occasions. Using readily accessible but interesting ingredients, the series features dishes from around the world - Italy, Spain, Thailand, America, Ireland, Mexico and Vietnam are just some of the places which have inspired Rachel's suggestions. This is the perfect series for those who like to cook, but who don’t want to spend their life in the kitchen.

The History Channel (channel 68) brings you Planet Rock Profiles: Tracy Chapman at 19h00. This guitar-playing singer-songwriter got her big break when she played at Nelson Mandela's satellite-linked 70th birthday concert at Wembley Stadium, London in 1988. She won the hearts of enough viewers worldwide for her debut album, Tracy Chapman to climb to number 1 on the UK album chart within days and it has since spent 407 weeks in the charts. The landmark single from that album Fast Car introduced her to a legion of fans and the album went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide. Five albums and four Grammy awards later, Tracy is back with her sixth studio album Let It Rain.

Not to be left behind, MTV (channel 85) has Power Girls at 21h00. Rachel, Kelly, Millie and Ali strut their stuff to garner a job in Lizzie Grubman's New York City PR firm. The life of a PoweR Girl is sometimes glamorous, at other times stressful but always exciting. Watch as the Power Girls plan nightclub openings and album launches, hobnob with celebrities, wrangle the paparazzi, and shop, all while fighting for a permanent spot on Lizzie's team. These ambitious, young ladies intend to take over the celebrity party circuit, all under the watchful eye of Lizzie.
