CAMBRIDGE SPIES (article first published : 2005-07-23)

BBC Prime on DStv will screen Cambridge Spies on July 24 at 21h00.

This is the story of Blunt, Burgess, Philby and Maclean, the most successful spies in British history. In 1933 at Cambridge University, they establish a spy ring fuelled by youthful idealism, passionately committed to social justice and to fighting fascism. As Europe struggles against the dictatorships of Spain, Italy and the Third Reich, the four pass vital secrets to their enigmatic Russian contacts, while their missions take them from Guernica to Vienna, New York and Washington.

Bonded by their secrecy, knowing each other better than any wife or lover, the four endure the danger, risk, sacrifices and betrayal to which their status condemns them - until the inevitable breakdown in the spy circle culminates in a final, desperate flight to Moscow.

Cambridge Spies stars Samuel West as Anthony Blunt, Toby Stephens as Kim Philby, Tom Hollander as Guy Burgess, and Rupert Penry-Jones as Donald Maclean.
