THE FLYER (article first published : 2005-07-23)

The Flyer by Revel Fox has been officially selected as part of the Locarno Film Festival, taking place in Switzerland from August 3 to 13. The film has been selected to screen in the Open-air Programme at the Piazza Grande, the first South African film to do so. It will be seen by 8,000 people in an open-air cinema. It is the films’ international premier.

Co-written and directed by Revel Fox in his feature debut, The Flyer won high critical acclaim when released in South Africa in April, with appraisals for brilliant performances, heart-warming drama and inspirational message.

Director Revel Fox wanted to capture rhythm, movement and energy in a film about passion, danger and the quest for what seems to be the impossible, in a movie about trapeze flying, an art he himself mastered before entering into filmmaking.

The Flyer is the uplifting story of a young coloured boy saved from the mean streets of Cape Town by an old trapeze great and indoctrinated into the gravity-defying world of trapeze flying. But the flybar between success and failure swings in the balance as his past and present collide to dramatic effect.

The English-Afrikaans-language drama stars Marcel van Heerden, Craig Palm, Kim Engelbrecht and Ian van der Heyden as Kieren the flyer. The film is produced by Jeremy Nathan, Joel Phiri and Michelle Wheatley at IMG.
