LAUGH OUT LOUD (article first published : 2005-07-13)

M-Net is out to exploit South Africa's passion for laughter with a brand new comedy show, Laugh Out Loud. The show will be broadcast on Wednesday evenings, starting on August 17 at 19h30 and presenters will be announced shortly.

A key component of the show will be a stand-up comic search, co-ordinated by John Vlismas' Whacked Management. The hunt for red-hot, original comedic talent will take place at Cool Runnings with the top 16 comics spotted there getting their chance to perform on Laugh Out Loud. Viewers will have the chance to vote for their favourite comedian who will win a prize - apart from the obvious national recognition!

Produced by Bobby Heaney, Laugh Out Loud will combine hoaxes, scams and pranks. While most of the show will be filled with scams devised by a team of devious writers, a key component is a section which will allow viewers to submit tapes of their own clever hoaxes.

Carl Fischer, Head of M-Net Local Productions, is interested to see what South Africans will get up to when it comes to pulling pranks on their friends. "We're not looking for the typical 'funniest home video' here - we want people to set up harmless pranks and scams, and send us the footage," he says. "'Harmless' is the key word!"

It's the first time that M-Net has produced a comedy series since It's a Funny Country a few years ago. Fischer says that the focus is on sophisticated humour rather than slapstick comedy. "We're not out for cheap laughs here - the team of writers have been working hard at this for months already and we're sure that we have quality content to work with."

The show will be recorded in front of a studio audience, with a presenter to link the pre-recorded clips together.

Viewers can submit video footage of their pranks and hoaxes for Laugh Out Loud to Bobby Heaney Productions at 7 Kangnussie Street, Blairgowrie, Randburg, or PO Box 2145, Pinegowrie, 2123.
