MALUNDE (article first published : 2005-06-21)

The next offering at Cinema Sublime in Pietermaritzburg is Malunde, one of the first South African films to make a bid for international circuits.

It did well at the Toronto film festival and stars well-known South African actor Ian Roberts who plays an ex SADF man who has lost his way in the new South Africa. He is conned into taking a journey by a street child (“Malunde” is the name for street children) and is taken out of his comfort zone by the little boy.

“The film also has a strong Pietermaritzburg connection with director Stephanie Sycholt coming from this city,” says playwright Janet van Eden who has been the moving force behind the Cinema Sublime project. “An article was written by Shelagh McLoughlin in The Witness about Stephanie Sycholt at the time the film was released. Sycholt went to school in Pietermaritzburg and subsequently studied film in Germany.”

There will be screenings of Malunde at Cinema Sublime at 12h15 and 17h15 until June 24.
