SITHENGI WRITERS FORUM (article first published : 2005-05-19)

Sithengi Film and Television Market are looking for strong African and South African writers to enter their feature film scripts into the 2005 Writers Forum (WF).

The Sithengi Writers Forum will follow a slightly different format this year. With the launch of SEDIBA, writers have the opportunity to submit their scripts into that process where if selected they will undergo training and consultations with various script experts. As such Sithengi will no longer be offering mid-year development strand in which five projects were selected and submitted to local and international experts to write detailed script reports.

The organisation, however, is still looking for excellent scripts to be submitted to the WF at Sithengi where writers will have the opportunity to be matched with local and international producers. This also gives writers ample time to write and hone their scripts to perfection before submitting them by the September 15 deadline! (No extensions will be granted)

The WF is open to all writers of full-length feature film scripts/screenplays from South Africa and Africa. Sithengi is looking for well-written, uniquely African stories that are attractive to both a local and international market.

The final selection of projects will be forwarded to invited local and international co-producers, financiers and distributors, prior to Sithengi 2005, who are looking for scripts. These industry leaders will then select the projects and writers with whom they wish to meet and the Sithengi team will set up one-on-one meetings with the interested producers and/or financiers. The Writers Forum (WF) will offer talented writers the opportunity to meet various African and International producers through this series of one-on-one meetings.

The objective of the WF is to ensure that writers will be 'matched' with the correct people - those who are genuinely interested in their project with the capacity to come on board with either financing or as a producer.

Anyone selected for the Writers Forum (WF) at Sithengi 2005 has to be a registered and fully paid up Individual Member. Log onto the Sithengi website at www.sithengi.co.za and download the co-production application form. This form must be signed and faxed to Taryn da Canha at product@sithengi.co.za (phone 021 430 8186). The following must be e-mailed to her: synopsis (no longer than 1 page), treatment (no longer than 3 pages); character description/breakdown of central characters. (no longer than 1 page), and a one-page biography of the writer.

A copy of the completed feature-length screenplay should be couriered or mailed to Taryn da Canha, Sithengi, c/o SABC, 209 Beach Road, Sea Point, Cape Town, 8001, to be received on or before 15 September. (Total number of pages of application: six - excluding screenplay and application form).

NB: The lengths of the above application material must be strictly adhered to. Any incomplete applications or application material that is longer than required will be disqualified and no correspondence will be entered into.
