3RD DEGREE TURNS FIVE (article first published : 2005-05-16)

E! tvs 3rd Degree is five years old - and to celebrate five years on-air, it will be 3rd Degree with a difference on May 17 at 19h30.

Television viewers have become used to investigations into corruption, abuse, racism and injustice. Well this week the birthday show will be exposing all that is good in South African society. Heart-warming tales that prove there is much to be proud of in South Africa.

The show had humble beginnings - no office, no name, no secure future. But in May 2000, 3rd Degree was born and hit the screens with very modest ratings. Since then the show has taken off, quadrupled its audience and won numerous awards. With it has come a new style of television journalism in South Africa.

Presenter and executive producer Debora Patta has become well-known for her tough grilling interviews and an uncompromising style but at the end of the day the success of the show is a team effort. The programme now boasts 13 of some of South Africa's brightest and best journalists.

"We have grown from humble beginnings, says Debora Patta. We never had an office and our first AR was 1.8. Since then we have quadrupled our ratings and won numerous awards. This is all due to an outstanding team."
