HOLLYWOOD WAR EFFORT (article first published : 2005-04-24)

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on DStv has celebrated Hollywood's contribution to the war effort throughout April with a double-bill every Saturday from 21h00. The final series in this programme will be 36 Hours and Bataan on April 30.

Starting at 21h00, 36 Hours was directed in 1964 by Georges Seaton. Filmed in black and white, it stars James Garner and Eva Marie Saint. In this psychological war-drama the Germans capture an Army Major during World War II. They attempt to brainwash him into believing the war is over and that he is safe in an Allied hospital, so that he will divulge Allied invasion plans.

Following this film at 22h55 is Bataan, another black and white film, directed in 1943 by Tay Garnett and starring Robert Taylor. The film is set at the time when Japan has just invaded the Philippines and the US Army attempts a desperate defence. Thirteen men are chosen to blow up a bridge on the Bataan peninsula and keep the Japanese from rebuilding it.
