PUNCH DRUNK LOVE (article first published : 2003-04-10)

Every Sunday, the Berea CineCentre at Berea Centre hosts a series of art movies titled Cinema Sublime. The programme operates as a fund-raising project for the NSA Galleries’ outreach programme.

The next movie on April 13 is Punch-Drunk Love made in the United States in 2002 and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson who won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival 2002.

A much-requested film from audiences and rated highly by discerning critics, Punch Drunk Love is a unique, eclectic and totally unexpected romantic comedy. Barry Egan is a bi-polar, beleaguered garage owner with seven sisters whose abuse has kept him alone and unable to fall in love.

He is being blackmailed by a gang of brothers - one of whom is played by the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman - who are trying to collect money on behalf of their sister, a phone-sex hostess. But when a harmonium and a mysterious woman (Emily Watson) enters his life, his romantic journey begins.
