SUNSHINE STATE (article first published : 2005-04-19)

Appearing on M-Net Monday Night Premières on April 25 at 20h30 is Sunshine State, a drama directed by John Sayles and featuring Angela Bassett, Edie Falco and Timothy Hutton.

Acclaimed writer/director John Sayles’ Sunshine State is set on a Florida Island where real estate development is changing a modest beachside community into an upscale manicured resort. The long-time locals are divided on whether to cash in or stand on their grounds.

Marly Temple (Edie Falco) is living her father’s dream of running a motel, only now that it has become a nightmare. Without any support from the family members, and current divorce from her husband Steve (Richard Edson), she starts contemplating selling.

In the next town Desiree Perry (Angela Bassett), has returned after 25 years to show off her new trophy husband (James McDaniel). Sent away by her proud parents after she disgraced them, Desiree, like Mary, pursued a career in “show business”. She also finds out her little hometown of Lincoln Beach, an African-American enclave created during the era of segregation is also eyed by developers.

As both women grapple with the weight of family history and expectations, and wrestle with questions of love, duty and responsibility, Sunshine State offers an indelible portrait of two women, two families, and two communities standing on the brink of change.
