BEND OF THE RIVER & SKAMMEN (article first published : 2005-04-14)

On April 14, the University's Film Club in Pietermaritzburg will be back in action with Anthony Mann's 1952 film, Bend of the River, a film central to the turn that the Western took during the post-war period away from the straightforward celebration of heroism and the myth of the frontier that characterised early examples of the genre, and towards more complex and problematic heroes.

In Bend of the River, James Stewart plays a man with a violent past. The film will be shown at 18h00 in the Centre for Visual Arts lecture theatre off Ridge Road.

On April 21, the Club will show Ingmar Bergman's 1968 film, Skammen/The Shame. Hailed as one of Bergman's best films, this movie has been described as an extraordinary study of the arbitrary destructiveness of war and of a marriage under strain. The central couple Bergman regulars Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow play concert violinists who attempt to ignore the conflict around them until confronted by events which force them to look at each other and their relationship with brutal clarity. Starting time 18h00 in the CVA off Ridge Road.
