DOLLARS & WHITE PIPES (article first published : 2005-03-21)

Dollars & White Pipes, the seventh film in the M-Net Original Movies series starts on March 28 at 20h30.

Taken from a true story, it is based in Cape Town's seedy clubbing underworld and explores gangsterism, drugs and shows how material gain can affect lifelong loyalty.

Bernie Baatjies (Clint Brink) has a dream of becoming rich and famous, having all the material possessions that wealth affords. His hero is JR from American TV show Dallas, which he watches religiously each week. Unfortunately, he lives on the Cape Flats where poverty, gangs and drugs are everywhere. He is addicted to mandrax and it is only when his friend is killed that he decides to give up drugs and go to Cape Town in the hope of realising his dream.

Without education and experience, he struggles to find employment. Just as he's about to give up, he finally finds a job at a club after falsifying his credentials. One of the owners (Bernard Farber, played by Jonathan Pienaar) takes pity on him, seeing himself as Bernie when he was young. He is promoted to barman and learns about the seedy world of clubbing.

He gains Farber's trust and is given shares in the business. His luck changes when one of the owners is killed and the club closes down. Unperturbed, Bernie opens his own club, but must contend with a violent drug syndicate, headed by Kuyser (Kevin Smith). Bernie realises that his only recourse is to befriend Kuyser. He soon starts using drugs and after a misunderstanding with bouncers, Kuyser beats Bernie up for his lack of courage.

He has lost Kuyser's respect and control of his club. Kuyser sets Bernie a task to prove his loyalty. Will Bernie choose loyalty or money?

Dollars & White Pipes is based on a true story, written and directed by Donovan Marsh, and produced by Anant Singh, Helena Spring and Donovan Marsh from Videovision entertainment. The cast includes Clint Brink, Kevin Smith, Jonathan Pienaar and Joey Rasdien.
