CHANNEL O MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS (article first published : 2005-03-1)

Subsequent to the success of the 1st Reel Music Video Awards held in December 2003, Channel O, M-Net's popular music channel on DStv is to present the Channel O African Music Video Awards to be held on March 31, 2005.

The Channel O African Music Video Awards will be staged at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre and broadcast on Channel O a week later. Unlike most award shows where a panel of judges choose the winners, the Channel O African Music Video Awards winners are decided on by Channel O viewers.

A vibrant and colourful line up is scheduled for the Channel O African Music Video Awards, with artists from all over Africa, including the host nation South Africa, billed to perform. The awards system stands out from anything else in the continent in that the awards are specific to music videos and are purely viewer's choice awards. This year's qualifying music videos were produced between October 2003 and December 2004; and should have received airplay on Channel O to qualify for the nomination.

"We hope the Channel O African Music Video Awards will go a long way in creating a climate where music videos can attain world-class standards. In addition, we would like the awards ceremony to stand out as the hippest music awards show in Africa," says channel head Ayanda Tshabalala.
