AWARD FOR U-CARMEN EKHAYELITSHA (article first published : 2005-02-25)

The South African film U-Carmen eKhayelitsha recently won the prestigious Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Film producer Anant Singh was delighted and proud to hear the news. My heartiest congratulations go to Pauline Malefane, Mark Dornford-May, Dick Enthoven and the Carmen team on this great achievement.

I admire Mark's courage and commitment to this project, both on stage and on screen. U-Carmen eKhayelitsha is certainly a unique South African version of Bizet's timeless opera in the Xhosa language and one that illustrates the universality of the story."

Anant Singh was on his way to attend the 77th Academy Awards in Los Angeles where his film, Yesterday written and directed by Darrell James Roodt, is nominated for in the Best Foreign Language category.
