NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TOPS (article first published : 2003-04-6)

National Geographic Channel (NGC), the global leaders in intelligent factual entertainment, has exceeded the 30 million mark for subscribers throughout Europe and Africa - outstripping its 2002 projections.

The UK and Ireland market leads the Channelís growth amongst households with an incredible increase of 1,047,742 over the last 12 months. The Czech Republic shows the most rapid market growth with a staggering 584.62% increase since 2001.

The NGCís reach into homes across Europe and Africa has risen at a steady rate since launch in the UK in 1997. Since that initial subscriber base of 3.5m households across three countries, the channel has rolled out across over 30 additional major television markets. 2002 subscriber figures are up generally by three million across the European and African territories since 2001. The growth has been powered by increased distribution to new markets and higher penetration in existing markets.

To date, NGC Europe broadcasts in a total of 34 countries and 17 languages and has established its presence in the global market place as a provider of intelligent and entertaining documentary programming. The Channelís success runs on the back of a mission to establish a brand with close affinity to viewerís thirst for information; bringing to screen leading explorers and adventurers; and offering audiences gold-standard and engaging life adventures, explorations, wildlife, peoples, cultures and natural phenomena through the highest quality documentaries.

NGC UKís success at the UK Promax Awards in November 2002 included Tooth which scooped a gold in the Best Channel/Corporate Promotion category, and We Go Further which received a silver in the Best Promotional Campaign category.
