77TH ACADEMY AWARDS (article first published : 2005-02-21)

DStv's E! Entertainment (Channel 41) brings all the glitz, glamour and excitement of the 77th Academy Awards to channel subscribers on February 27, as it takes place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, with comedian Chris Rock as the host.

The programme includes Countdown to the Red Carpet at 21h00; Live From the Red Carpet (pre-show) at 03h00, Live 2005 Academy Awards (post-show) at 09h00

Last year's Academy Awards followed the Golden Globes' lead to the final nominees. All four lead-acting recipients preceded their Oscar triumphs with Golden Globe wins but, this year, the road to the Oscars is an unpredictable one.

Potential Oscar favourites Hilary Swank, of the boxing saga Million Dollar Baby, and Jamie Foxx, of the Ray Charles film biography Ray, walked away with lead-acting prizes at the Globes. Now add in lead-acting, Golden Globe winners and Hollywood veterans Leonardo DiCaprio, as Hughes in The Aviator, and Annette Bening in the theatre farce Being Julia, and the Oscars could be an anything-goes scenario across-the-board.

Other potential nominees include Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen for Sideways; Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator; Johnny Depp as playwright J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland; Liam Neeson and Laura Linney for Kinsey, the film biography of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey; Imelda Staunton for the abortion drama Vera Drake; and Javier Bardem for The Sea Inside, based on the real-life story of euthanasia lobbyist Ramon Sampedro.
