25 VROUENS (article first published : 2004-12-29)

Frank Opperman's film version of his highly-successful one-man play 25 Vrouens will be screened on M-Net on December 31 at 17h00.

Opperman reprises his role of the multiply-married Colin le Rieche in this humorous and touching look at life, love and loss. The drama plays out during the day of Colin's 26th wedding. While he's busy with his last-minute arrangements, he tells the viewer about his previous 25 wives - yes, he can name them all, in order - and his childhood.

True to form for a man who has been married 25 times before, it all goes wrong at the last minute - the best man cancels to play in a golf tournament, his car breaks down and the bride's bouquet gets stolen. Fortunately Colin has seen it all before, and keeps the plans together.

It's not all fun and games - Colin's narrative reveals a deep-seated feeling of loss and shows how the blueprint for all his relationships was defined very early on in his life. 25 Vrouens is a poignant parody on life and relationships. Beneath the humour of Colin's take on his relationship history lies the tale of a damaged man struggling to come to terms with his past, and desperately seeking 'the one' who he thinks will make his life complete.

25 Vrouens was written by Harry Kalmer, adapted for the screen and directed by Tiny Laubscher.
