DUAL VIEW DECODER (article first published : 2003-03-22)

Gone are the days when parents have to be interruped by offspring sending TV-Mail to their friends or avid sportsman wanting to watch the Cricket World Cup while food fanatic wife wants to see BBC Food.

The new Dual View digital satellite decoder from MultiChoice Africa is set to change all that. Essentially two decoders in one, it has the advantage that it costs a lot less than two separate decoders. It only requires one smartcard, one subscription and a nominal access fee to function.

Nolo Letele, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, says: "The Dual View decoder is a significant product for MultiChoice Africa as it allows us to fulfill a genuine customer requirement while opening up new possibilities for the business. It sets MultiChoice Africa apart as not only a significant player in the local broadcasting industry, but also a company at the forefront of technological advances in the field of digital satellite broadcasting."

Dual View allows DStv ultimate viewing on two television sets from one decoder. The primary viewing environment (or TV1) has all the functionality that can be found in the latest single view decoder including the latest MultiChoice Africa broadcasting innovations -- TV-Mail, TV-Shopping, the Extended Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), while the secondary environment (or TV2) has everything except Interactive services.

In other words, you will NOT be able to access the extended electronic TV Guide, games, weather, SuperSport Zone, etc. on TV2.

Remote control wars also come to an end with the Dual View decoder. The two TV environments have separate remote controls. They have the same form and layout but the keys have different colours for easy distinction between the two. TV2 has a tvLINK facility.

Additional advantages of the Dual View decoder include the ability to set separate Language Options on the two television environments, the ability to set programme reminders separately on each TV, and the ability to record one DStv channel on a VCR while watching a different DStv channel (depending on the installation set-up of the VCR).
