WESTERN & THE SEARCHERS (article first published : 2004-10-9)

On October 13 in Pietermaritzburg, the University Film Club continues its European Series of films with Western, Manuel Poirier's 1997 Cannes Jury Prize winner, a gentle and offbeat road movie set in Brittany.

On October 14, The University Film Club will present The Searchers, John Ford's 1956 western, described as the finest and most ambitious film from America's premier poet of the Western.

The film follows John Wayne's Ethan Edwards as he searches for his niece, abducted as a child by Comanche Indians. He is a lonely and brave man, but deeply flawed by a frightening racial hatred. Is his intention to bring her home, or to kill her to save her from the taint of her assimilation into Comanche culture?

Both films are at 18h00 in the viewing room at the Jack Heath Gallery in Ridge Road. Tickets R12 (R8 students and scholars) at the door: Full semester memberships R80.
