FREE SEMINAR (article first published : 2004-07-23)

A free three-hour seminar presenting an introduction to the law of copyright in the context of film and television production will be hosted by the Film & TV Unit at Monash and presented by Webber Wentzel.

This fantastic opportunity has been generously opened to industry professionals who want to learn more about copyright & intellectual property, rights in cinematograph films and related works; authorship and ownership of copyright.

Other items dealt with will be principles of assignment, licence and transfer; chain of copyright title and Enforcement and extent of copyright protection; Television format rights; script development and option agreements; clearance of rights for film production purposes: underlying and incorporated works as well as production contracts and commissioning agreements.

The seminar will also discuss third party service and supply contracts in respect of copyright works (directors, art department); musical works and sound recordings: SAMRO, collecting societies and the needle-time royalty; and artists' contracts, the Performers' Protection Act and performers' royalties.

There will also be a brief overview of some current production funding initiatives such as Section 24 F of the Income Tax Act and the Department of Trade and Industry Rebate as well as a summary of the recommendations to the Premier's Office from the Gauteng Film Office Indaba: March 2004.

The seminar will take place on July 30 at 08h45 for registration, with the presentation from 09h00 to 12h00 at the Film & TV Unit, Monash University at 144 Peter Rd, Ruimsig (just off Beyers Naude) in Johannesburg.
