TALKING MOVIES (article first published : 2004-07-21)

This week's Talking Movies assesses whether Will Smith's new sci-fi thriller I, Robot can compete at the box office with the Spider-Man 2 juggernaut. Smith takes on another action-hero role, playing a detective investigating the threat that robots may pose to their human owners in a film set in 2035.

Touch Of Pink is a coming-out-of-the-closet story with a twist, starring Jimi Mistry and Kyle MacLachlan. Mistry plays a young gay man who is forced to assume a straight lifestyle when his devout Muslim mother pays him a visit. Presenter Tom Brook spoke to Mistry when he was promoting the production at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

The winner of the Audience Award at Sundance, Maria Full Of Grace, is also reviewed on this week's programme. It explores drug trafficking through the eyes of a 17-year-old Colombian girl, and earned its first-time director, Joshua Marston, and star, Catalina Sandino Moreno, the Best Director and Best Actress trophies at the Berlin Film Festival.

The German director Margarethe Von Trotta chronicles the Holocaust in Rosenstrasse, a drama based on a true story about German women who saved their Jewish husbands from death during World War Two. She is interviewed and there's a review of the film. And Talking Movies sits down with Stacy Peralta, who has written and directed Riding Giants, a documentary about surfboarding and the pioneers of big wave surfing. Peralta's last release was the award-winning skateboarding film Dogtown & Z-Boys.

Talking Movies is presented on DStv on July 20 (21h30), July 23 (02h30, 09h30 & 15h30), July 22 (19h30) and July 24 (22h30).
