SNITCH (article first published : 2004-07-10)

M-Net takes a giant leap forward on July 15, when it launches its first homegrown English drama series, Snitch.

Part cop drama, part psychological thriller. Snitch is a modern day Romeo and Juliet story, studded with chilling suspense and laced with black humour. The 90-minute pilot programme will be aired at 19h30 on July 15 to be followed by 22 equally exhilarating one-hour episodes.

"It's one heck of a show," says Carl Fischer, Director: M-Net Local Productions, "and exactly what the M-Net mix needs at this point. Drama series with self-contained episodes - such as Nip/Tuck, CSI and 24 attract huge audiences worldwide and also perform exceptionally well on M-Net.

"But viewers want to see our own heroes and our own villains. Snitch was written and created from a perspective that is distinctly and conspicuously South African. We weren't set on any particular genre. We briefed in a dozen or so of the country's best and most experienced writers and directors, and the Snitch concept was the best."

Director and co-creator Gray Hofmeyr set the award-winning US drama series 24 as a benchmark. "We wanted to create a serial suspense thriller that was just as gritty, gutsy and sexy. I'm confident we've achieved that. A deep undercover operation aimed at bringing down a mafia-type family is the perfect vehicle for high drama and spine-tingling suspense."

The story follows Caz O'Donough, a sexy 20-year-old with no idea that the new love of her life, Lawrence Carter, is a member of the notorious Carter crime family whom her tough-cop dad Chisel has been trying to bring down.

Snitch features some of South Africa's top acting talent. Shannon Esra, who recently performed at the presidential inauguration, plays the role of Caz. The cast also includes Antony Coleman; Brendan Grealy, Stephen van Niekerk and Justin Strydom.

Acting icons Grethe Fox and Ian Roberts add panache and expertise to the production. The entire series was shot on location. Snitch is produced by Endemol South Africa.
