TALKING MOVIES (article first published : 2004-05-30)

Talking Movies on the DStv channel offers a fascinating line-up.

The Day After Tomorrow dramatises climate disasters brought on by global warming and, as presenter Tom Brook reports, some people in the United States are using it for political purposes. The film - by director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and starring Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal - has been hijacked by politicians and others opposed to President Bush's stance on the environment.

Talking Movies is at the world premiere of Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban in Manhattan, where the Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron joins child stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson on the red carpet. Cuaron is best known for the sexy road movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, so how has he made his mark on this third instalment in the series?

Hollywood's summer movie season used to be made up of undemanding popcorn entertainment targeting teenagers and young people. But the studios' strategy may be changing this year, with many forthcoming releases appealing to more mature audiences. These include two remakes: the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate starring Denzel Washington and The Stepford Wives with Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler and Glenn Close.

The programme has been given access to the set of The Pink Panther in New York, a film which will be a prequel to Peter Sellers' original from 1963. It stars Steve Martin, Kevin Kline and Emily Mortimer, and there's a behind-the-scenes report on the production.

Finally, the screenwriter Hanif Kureishi is interviewed about the American release of The Mother. Best known for My Beautiful Laundrette, his latest drama focuses on an older woman who initiates an affair with her daughter's boyfriend. Will it unsettle US audiences?

The programme will be featured on June 1 (21h30); June 4 (02h30, 09h30 & 15h30); June 3 (18h30) and June 5 (22h30).
