MUSA NJOKO (article first published : 2004-05-22)

M-Netís Project Fame, produced by Endemol and sponsored by MTN has announced that the part of the guidance counsellor will be played by Musa Njoko.

32 year-old Musa describes herself as a "proud Zulu gal". She hails from Kwa Mashu in KZN. Her involvement in the community where she grew up is still very strong. Today, she is the co-founder of the uMusa HIV/AIDS project in the area and regularly addresses scholars and students raising awareness, educating and advocating for the rights of those affected and infected with HIV/AIDS.

Musa is one of seven teachers who will instruct Project Fame students. Peter Terry is The Principal and his guidance staff include a performance coach; head of voice; head of music; and heads of movement.

Musa Njoko is a dynamic motivational speaker, preacher, musician and businesswomen. She was also one of the first women in South Africa to disclose her HIV-positive status. She was a finalist for the Checkers Woman of The Year and the Elle Magazine Woman of the Year both in 2002 and recently scooped the Amstel Salute to Success Tribute Award.

Musa is the founder and Director of Khanya AIDS Interventions CC. She has been extensively involved in the development of numerous training packages, AIDS policies and programs for the corporate sector, government and NGO's. She was the co-presenter and researcher on Positive, a 13-part TV series focusing on AIDS awareness. She also works closely with Soul City in the development of Soul Buddyz. She also presented on Take 5.In 2001 Musa released a 13-track contemporary gospel album. The following year, she won a recording deal with Sony Music SA and released another album entitled Victory. She is currently working on a docu-theatre show to be stage later this year at the Market Theatre where she plays the lead role.

Recently on World AIDS Day her insert appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show as part of an internationally acclaimed documentary, A Closer Walk, directed by Oscar nominee Bob Bilheimer.

Delighted with this appointment, CEO of Local Productions at M-Net Carl Fischer said, "We are honored to have Musa on board. She is not only an incredible performer and talented musician, but her compassion and wisdom will make her an outstanding counselor to the students."
