OUTSIDE THE RULES (article first published : 2004-04-27)

In BBC Prime’s Friday Film slot on DStv, the second part of Outside the Rules can be seen on April 30 at 21h00.

This dark thriller enters the world of forensic psychiatrist Natalie Vine (Daniela Nardini). Thirty-something Natalie works in a secure hospital, where she attempts to understand the crimes - and the minds - of the damaged and the dangerous. She assists the police in their hunt for violent criminals. Her expertise enables her to get inside the heads of both victims and perpetrators, as well as dig out the mental and emotional clues that unlock the crimes.

In the previous story, Vine must gain the trust of Rachel Selby, a woman who has been imprisoned for offences involving the abduction and murder of children. One little girl is still missing and Vine has to find a way of persuading her to reveal the child's whereabouts. Vine has to confront some very real demons of her own, and she frequently confides in Hal, her mysterious, avuncular mentor. Her discussions with Selby result in appalling flashbacks and nightmares. Meanwhile, Selby gets into trouble with fellow prisoners through her inappropriate behaviour. And more pressingly, it seems that someone wants her dead.
