DSTV HISTORY CHANNEL (article first published : 2004-04-2)

The History Channel on DStv provides fascination entertainment including programmes on Estee Lauder and Max Factor.

On April 1 at 18h00, Biography: JP Morgan deals with a man who went from bank clerk to Emperor of Wall Street: JP Morgan was so rich that he bankrolled the United States - twice - and so powerful that presidents sought his advice. But the hard-nosed deal-maker met his match in Roosevelt; their battles are just some of the fascinating highlights of this profile of a man also remembered as a patron of the arts world and philanthropist.

On April 5 at 19h45, the channel focuses on one of the wealthiest self-made women in America. Examine the public and private life of the woman who built her cosmetics empire on the dream of every woman: to feel beautiful. (The History Channel will also host a biography on Max Factor on April 19 at 19h45).

Roman Polanski will be featured on April 6 at 19h45, a life that has been packed with more high drama than any of the enduring films he has directed. He escaped from Krakow during World War II but both his parents were interned, his mother perishing in Auschwitz. From Poland he went to Paris, London and then Hollywood where he indulged in the hedonistic excesses of the 60ís. His marriage to Sharon Tate was blissful until their lives were shattered by the Manson Gang in 1969. Shortly after this, Polanski was arrested for having sex with a 13-year-old girl and was forced to live as a fugitive from American justice. Interviews with many of Polanski's closest friends and clips from films such as Knife In The Water, Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby give an insight into this director's incredible life.

On April 9 at 23h05, Piltdown Man takes viewers to Piltdown in England in 1912. Workmen digging a gravel pit discover pieces of a skull that prove Darwin's theory! The missing link is found! Disputed for years, the "find" that fooled Sherlock Holmes' creator, was finally proved to be an elaborate hoax. We search for the master scientific con artist and examine his possible motives.
