ZING (article first published : 2003-02-22)

2003 got off to a fun start with Zing, a new local TV competition programme in which kykNET sets out to find South Africa's funkiest Afrikaans singing duo.

Two different programmes are screened each week - a half-hour programme at 19h30 on Wednesdays and an hour-long programme at 20h00 on Fridays. Viewers without satellite get a chance to take part in the Zing frolics as repeats of the programme are screened on M-Net at 10h00 on Sundays and at 22h00 on Tuesdays.

kykNET's head, Theo Erasmus, promises a fun programme. "Every Zing episode will be filled with surprises. The Zing team has been instructed to give the programme a cheeky, wacky feel and tell the Zing story from interesting and unusual angles. It's going to be an energetic, zany series."

The programme's two presenters, Kim Nicholas and Denver Vraagom, generate much energy for this show which is the biggest and most expensive kykNET project to hit DStv. The Zing judges are friendly and only give constructive criticism. The programme never uses backing tracks. During auditions, the duos had to sing a capella but in further elimination rounds, an orchestra will accompany the singers.
