ABOUT SCHIMIDT (article first published : 2004-03-28)

On March 29, M-Net will screen the movie About Schimidt, a drama starring Jack Nicholson, Hope Davis, Dermot Mulroney and Kathy Bates, directed by Alexander Payne.

Warren Schmidt is 60-something, retired, and desperately unhappy. When his wife Helen dies unexpectedly, he is left adrift, but suddenly finds new purpose in life when he comes across her love letters – letters he never knew existed. Next thing, Warren starts writing to a Tanzanian orphan, and sets out to stop his daughter Jeannie from marrying a man he thinks is utterly unworthy of her, a mission that turns out to be a good deal tougher than he thought when he meets the fellow’s feisty, uninhibited mother.

Jack Nicholson won an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe and scores of other awards for his superb portrayal of an old man who has lost the plot. Funny, thought provoking and sad, but ultimately uplifting. Kathy Bates was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role.
