MANOJ LAKHANI ON DCC COMMITTEE (article first published : 2004-03-23)

Manoj Lakhani,CEO of the media empowerment company Moksha Media, has been appointed chairman of the motion picture committee at the Durban Chamber of Commerce. This committee has been set up to promote local business interests as well contribute to the growing media industry in Durban. Manoj approached the Chamber last year to start the initiative as he sees motion picture, television and commercials industry potential in Durban and KZN.

"Not only do we have all the aspects in the city and province - technical infrastucture, wonderful weather, glorious locations and a tourist friendly environment,we also have some great talent locally, he says.

Manoj also sits on the Film and Publications Board - a role he takes seriously because of its responsibility to protect children.

Passionate about Durban, Manoj recently entered into a joint venture with the training institution ICESA to create the Broadcast Academy, teaching and training local people in various aspects of broadcasting in film, television and radio. Manoj has extensive media experience with his stints at Zee and etv and has produced over 3,000 hours of local and international television.

He has also been involved in local and international radio and one of his current ventures with Worldspace Digital Radio is the Sai Global Harmony radio station currently being beamed from India into Southern Africa. He is also involved in the production of Bombay Duck being shot locally.

Manoj is looking forward to contributing to the community TV venture, the newly established Durban Film Office and the Durban Film Festival, to name a few initiatives in Durban."Our colleagues in the industry are doing the best to make it happen and we should support them all." Manoj is optimistic that the proposed film studio will contribute to the success of the region globally."Unlike Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban has the added advantage of attracting the Bollywood industry because of the goodwill and the opportunities that exist." Last year, he led a KZN delegation to the International Film Festival in New Delhi to promote the region to the subcontinent.
