ROBERT MAKE-OVER (article first published : 2004-03-11)

MNet is screening a second series of First National Bank HomeLoans Trading On Style. Amount the three couples competing against one another to make over their homes are Caroline and Roger Robèrt from Durban, with Leigh Bennie as presenter. In this reality-based home makeover series, the show follows three enthusiastic couples as they over their homes, room by room, on a limited budget (see earlier story on artSMart Film & TV pages)

Roger and Caroline Robért love the sun and the surf and, after eight years in the soggy UK, KZN was calling. They fell in love with the Cape Dutch style house as the perfect place to raise their growing family. The pool and garden were just what the doctor ordered. The home has loads of potential and was valued at R1 million.

Roger owns a communications business that specialises in audio for telephones and cell phones while Caroline does the books and admin for a small business

Roger considers himself “a people person with a great zest for life” who is considerate of others and Caroline thinks she’s “bubbly and full of fun” as well as being kind and caring. Although they both agreed that their worst trait is lack of patience!

The pair knew each other from school days and ended up staying in the same digs while travelling in the UK. They have two children: Jarrod (9) and Jessica (6) who the tv crew considered very well-behaved and well-adjusted. The family enjoys camping, skiing and wake boarding.

Roger is a dab hand at making breakfast and prides himself in the fact that he makes the “best breakfast on this planet” and I cleans up. However, Caroline hates the kitchen but is renowned for her vegetable bake. “It’ll probably be inscribed on my tombstone!” she quips. They both love seafood. This obviously means that the kitchen will be an interesting room in the make over process!

Presenter Leigh Bennie was born in Cape Town and raised in a little village in the Usutu Valley in Swaziland. She attended boarding school and the first two years of university in Pietermaritzburg. Now based in Gauteng, she trained as an air traffic controller and has found her niche in Radio 702.
