B ON M-NET/DSTV (article first published : 2004-02-28)

M-Net has launched a brand new reality show - B on Mnet - which promises to make a star of the audience both on M-Net and on a dedicated DStv channel 41. Launched two weeks ago, the M-Net show is on Tuesday nights at 19h00 and on DSTV channel 41 from midday until midnight.

M-Net was the first in the world to secure rights to this innovative concept, affirming the broadcaster's position as a worldwide leader at the level of pioneering television and interactive content. The concept presents an opportunity for M-Net to deploy all of the interactive experience and resources developed for hit shows like Big Brother and Idols, while taking advantage of the understanding of the audience that these have created.

Described as a cross between Candid Camera, Idols, talk-back radio (on TV) and Big Brother, B ON MNET allows anyone with anything special to say or do to be on TV. This revolutionary new format pushes the boundaries of audience participation, not only can they be involved in the outcome of a TV programme, but they can actually participate in the making thereof. B ON MNET uses a patented system, licensed by earth television network, for gathering broadcast quality content from remote cameras which are activated by cell phones

B ON MNET studios are being set up in four shopping centres around the country in Durban, its Gateway Shopping Centre.

Clips from these recordings are currently screened on a dedicated B ON MNET channel 41 on DStv and on the B ON MNET 30-minute show on M-Net channel at 19h00 on Tuesdays. The content of M-Net shows will be determined by audience votes, and will be developed from themes which run throughout the series, including the SA Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Search, dating and other revolving weekly themes.

Simply visit the B ON MNET studio. Once you have done your recording in the B ON MNET Studio, you have to log on to the M-Net online community at www.mnet.co.za, and supply full details. If your recording is used, the system will send you a notification via SMS letting you know that you are about to B ON MNET, so you don't have to worry about missing your big moment of fame.

Once selected, outstanding participants' video clips will be converted and uploaded on the Internet allowing participants the opportunity to send them as "greeting cards" to their friends. Comments and opinions registered in the B ON MNET Studios can be extended to forum discussions online and viewers can review audience performances and respond to topics of interest.

This is a special invitation to all performers and philosophers (and agents, to send their talent) to make a (30-60 second) recording at your nearest studio. We encourage you to promote your shows/acts etc by showing us a short piece from it/them that could attract audiences. Alternatively if you just having something that you would like to share with the rest of South Africa, this is also your opportunity. This way you get free advertising and we make a great TV show. You can make as many recordings as you wish - and we encourage you to make different recordings each week, giving your show/act/talent exposure.

Each day three clips of the day are chosen which go through to the finals for Clip of the Week. Audiences vote for the funniest/ wackiest/ most creative clips to go into the finals for the Clip of the Series which wins R50,000!
