CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2004 (article first published : 2004-01-25)

South Africa's presence at Cannes 2004 is officially recognised as a part of the government’s programme to celebrate South Africa's ten years of democracy. The NFVF is spearheading the coordination of this important event and as such is making the following announcements:

The president of Cannes, Mr. Gilles Jacob has requested that a one-minute film be produced by a young South African filmmaker, to be screened at Cannes prior to the main opening film. The one minute film must have the theme South Africa: From Apartheid to Democracy.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) now makes a call to final year film students as well as new and upcoming filmmakers to submit proposals for concepts that fit within this theme.

The following information must be borne in mind: The theme of the proposal must be "South Africa, from Apartheid to Democracy". The proposal must be such that it can be packaged into a one minute film. Submissions can only be sent by final year film students or young filmmakers new to the industry and the proposal should be accompanied by an identified director and producer. The selected team will go through an induction programme courtesy of the International Marketing Council, which is the custodian of Brand South Africa. All applications and queries to media@nfvf.co.za and the closing date for entries is February 6 2004.

There will be a South African film retrospective at Cannes and all filmmakers are urged to submit short and feature films that they would like to be considered as part of this retrospective. Please send the title of the film, the name of the producer and director, a short synopsis and a VHS copy of the film. Please also send photographs and publicity material on the film. All films are to be sent to the NFVF office in an envelope clearly marked:

South African Retrospective Cannes 2004; NFVF; 87 Central Street; Houghton; 2198.
