A KNIGHT’S TALE (article first published : 2003-02-16)

William Thatcher's childhood dream was to become a knight. But as he grew up he realized that his dream might just be that - a dream. He became aware of the social standards that destined one’s life; as a result his dream became increasingly unreachable.

To be screened on February 23 at 20h00, M-Net's premiere, A Knight's Tale follows the rise of a poor born William Thatcher (Heath Ledger - The Patriot) to a very noble and a respectable person.

In Europe in the 14th Century the upward mobility of those born poor was not a common concept. Fortune did not come overnight. People died in the same class into which they were born. That was the natural order. And William's dream of knighthood was as impossible to attain as flying to the moon.

But one day, at a medieval jousting tournament, where knights race towards each other in tests of skill and nerve, William and his friend witness their master suffering an untimely death on the verge of winning a tournament. William impulsively decides to don the deceased knight's armour and finish the tournament in the name of survival and, of course, fulfil his long-lived dream. He manages to pass detection and win the tournament. An unlikely legend is born.

Written by an Academy Award winning writer-director Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Payback) A Knight's Tale is part road trip, part romance, part exuberant action-adventure. It is a rich, romantic, raucous ride during which a young squire embarks on a quest to change his stars, win the heart of the love of his life Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and rock his medieval world.
