CHRISTMAS WITH BBC PRIME (article first published : 2003-12-14)

BBC Prime on the DStv channel is celebrating Christmas and the New Year in a big way this year. There’s dinosaur drama, comedy favourites, What Not to Wear Specials and the 40th anniversary of the world’s greatest music show Top of the Pops.

Bob Hoskins and James Fox star in the BBC Prime premiere of The Lost World, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stomping 1912 dinosaur fantasy, which has been brought to life with the most amazing special effects. As if that’s not enough there’s also another chance to catch the BBC’s landmark dinosaur documentaries Walking with Dinosaurs and The Ballad of Big Al.

More frocks and frankness are on display in two What Not to Wear Specials. Trinny and Susannah get their teeth stuck into celebrity wardrobes as they prowl the Oscar and Bafta catwalks and give four unsuspecting stars a fashion makeover.

On the comedy front there’s a whole week of seasonal specials at 21h00. Two dynamic duos set out to wreak comedy havoc; Del Boy and Rodney star in an Only Fools and Horses Special, while French & Saunders turn their comical eye onto BBC stalwarts Monarch of the Glen and Waking the Dead. But there’s also Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, Absolutely Fabulous: the Collection and The Vicar of Dibley and Yes Minister specials.

In fact there’s something for everyone this Christmas on BBC Prime. CBBC on Prime is packed with children’s favourites including Christmas with the Teletubbies, a new series of Balamory, plus brand new treats Tikkabilla, Captain Abercromby and Robbie the Reindeer.

The Ground Force team go festive and Charlie Dimmock tries her hand at two alternative careers, in case her green fingers wilt in Charlie Goes Latin and Charlie on the Big Trapeze. There are also seasonal specials of The Weakest Link, Bargain Hunt and Friends Like These.

To round off the year BBC Prime will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Top of the Pops with an all night party on BBC Prime on New Year’s Eve. Tune into this special night of musical hits featuring some of the greatest performers from the last 40 years including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, The Bee Gees, Elton John and many many more.

If you don’t have DStv, isn’t this tempting enough to give yourself a special Christmas present of the service?
