COXON’S ROYAL FEAST (article first published : 2003-12-8)

The BBC Food programme on the DStv channel will present Alan Coxon in Coxon’s Royal Feast, a five part series filmed entirely in Southern Africa as he tours Southern Africa investigating the cooking and culture of local Kings. The series offers viewers an in-depth look at how some of the Royal Households of Southern Africa live, eat, work and play and for the first time Alan will cook with these Southern African Kings and Queens.

Alan will meet, cook with and prepare a feast for King Goodwill Zwelithini, King Letsie III of Lesotho, the Ndebele Kings, King Makhosonke II and King Mayitjha, as well as King Leruo Molotlegi (the Bafokeng King) and the Xhosa speaking queens, Queen Regent Ndamase and Queen Sigcau. Alan has secured unprecedented “behind the scenes” access to these Royal Households.

Travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to Mpumalanga and from the Eastern Cape to Lesotho, viewers will be shown a variety of regional foods and specialities. Alan will conjure up amazing recipes using regional produce - recipes which can easily be reproduced at home. On the menu are such delights as Flash Fried Squid with Coconut Milk and Sweet Baked Rice, Roast Chicken in Salt Water Crust, Slow Roasted Cedar Planked Salmon and Banana Mandazi.

Viewing times are December 15 at 19h50, 16 (20h00), 17 (at 19h50), 18 (20h00) and 19 (19h45).
