HAAK & STEEK (article first published : 2003-11-13)

Daily soaps will never be the same again, thanks to comedian Casper de Vries and the wacky new series Haak & Steek that he created for kykNET. This is a half an hour-long send-up of favourite soapie characters and those all-too-familiar storylines.

Haak & Steek revolves around the trials and tribulations of the super-rich and semi-crazy Du Toit family, their friends, foes and hangers-on. It originated as a short insert on the second season of De Vries's very popular comedy show Die CasperRasper Show and this was followed by kykNET decision to commission Casper De Vries to develop the insert into an independent 13 part series.

Casper describes Haak & Steek as "an over the top Moulin Rouge treatment of The Bold and The Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and all the popular local soaps. "Add to the mix truckloads of visual gags and all the comic tricks in the book." The soap references will either have the addicts in stitches or drive them insane.

Haak & Steek is also the first musical soap/soap musical on television. When the characters can't control their emotions any longer they break into song. And beware; everything in Haak & Steek is completely off-the-wall and over-the-top. When there's a crisis, it's a REAL crisis, and when the characters start scheming and plotting they can't even trust themselves!

The programme cleverly uses all traditional soap characters: the patriarch the superbitch, the naïve young girl, the wild hunk, the earthy types, the mentally disturbed, the wild cards, the crooks and the angels. De Vries wrote the script, directed, and play two of the fabulous characters: the common music promoter Hanno Gelderblom and the psychotic young Blertsie.

Haak & Steek is described as “definitely not suitable for children, sensitive viewers and those who tape the soap repeats!”
